Meanderly is designed to help you explore Brisbane, discover its stories and collect the ones that become part of your experience of the city.
We've also designed Meanderly to work without needing to know who you are.
Privacy by design
Like everyone else, we're sick of hearing about data breaches.
So Meanderly takes a fairly simple approach to privacy:
If we don't need your personal information, we don't collect it.
You don't need an account to use Meanderly, and we don't require your name, email address, phone number, date of birth or other identifying information to explore and use the app. If you choose to contact us or send feedback, you may optionally provide your email address so we can respond.
We don't maintain a Meanderly user database containing personal profiles, and we don't sell your personal information to advertisers.
Your Meanderly experience — such as the stories you've completed and the stories you've saved to your To Do list — is stored locally in your browser on your device.
That means there's very little personal information for Meanderly to lose in the first place.
Information stored on your device
Meanderly uses your browser's local storage to remember parts of your experience on that device.
- stories you have marked as completed;
- stories you've saved to your To Do list; and
- whether you've already seen the Meanderly welcome screen.
This information remains in your browser rather than being stored in a Meanderly user database.
Because it is stored locally, clearing your browser data or using another browser or device may cause this information to be lost. Your Meanderly collection does not currently synchronise between devices.
Contact and feedback
If you send us feedback or contact us through Meanderly, we collect the information you include in your message, together with the category you select, the part of Meanderly the message was sent from and the page you were viewing.
You may also choose to provide an email address if you would like us to be able to reply. Providing an email address is optional.
We use this information to read and respond to your message and to help improve Meanderly. We don't use contact details submitted through the feedback form for marketing.
Contact submissions are sent through Resend to Meanderly's contact inbox. Meanderly does not currently maintain a separate contact database. Your submission may remain in the contact inbox until it is deleted.
Your location
Meanderly can use your device's location to show where you are on the map and help you discover stories around you.
Location is optional and is requested only when you choose My location. Your browser or device will ask for permission before giving Meanderly access to it.
When you use this feature, your precise device location is held temporarily in your browser and used to position you on the map.
Meanderly does not send your precise device location to our servers or store it. We don't create a history of where you've been and we don't continually track your location.
Meanderly's map uses OpenStreetMap. When the map moves to your location, your browser requests the map tiles needed to display that area directly from OpenStreetMap. OpenStreetMap may therefore receive ordinary technical information such as your IP address and information about the area of the map being displayed.
Meanderly does not provide OpenStreetMap with the precise location obtained from your device.
You can refuse location permission and continue using Meanderly. You can also withdraw location permission through your browser or device settings.
Directions
If you choose to get directions to a story, Meanderly opens a third-party mapping service with the story's destination location. Meanderly does not send your current device location to that service, and we do not receive or store your route or location information as part of this process.
Once the mapping service opens, that service may use your location to calculate a route according to its own privacy practices and permissions.
Payments
If you choose to support Meanderly through a payment, you will be directed to Stripe to complete the transaction. Meanderly does not receive or store your payment card details. Stripe processes the payment and its privacy practices apply.
Hosting and technical information
Meanderly is hosted using Vercel.
Like most web infrastructure providers, the services used to deliver Meanderly may process technical information necessary to deliver, secure and operate the website. This can include information such as IP addresses, browser or device information, request information and server logs.
This technical information is different from the information about your Meanderly collection that is stored locally in your browser.
Analytics, advertising and tracking
Meanderly does not currently sell personal information or use your information to build advertising profiles.
We don't currently require an account or use the stories you collect to create a server-side profile about you.
If we introduce analytics, advertising, cookies or other tracking technologies in the future, we'll update this policy to explain what is being collected, why we're collecting it and how it is used.
Third-party services
Meanderly relies on some third-party services to operate.
Vercel — which hosts and delivers the Meanderly website.
OpenStreetMap — which provides the map tiles displayed by Meanderly.
Resend — which provides the email delivery service used when you send feedback or contact us through Meanderly. Contact submissions sent through Resend may be processed in the United States.
Stripe — which processes optional payments made to support Meanderly. Payment details are provided directly to Stripe rather than being collected or stored by Meanderly.
These services may receive information needed to provide their services, including ordinary technical information such as IP address, browser information and details of the resources being requested. Resend also receives the information included in a contact submission so it can deliver that message.
They operate under their own privacy policies and practices.
Meanderly may also contain links to external websites. Once you follow a link to another website or service, that service's own privacy practices apply.
Sharing content
Meanderly allows you to choose to share content, such as badges or a link to Meanderly, using sharing options available on your device. Meanderly does not control or receive information about who you share this content with. Once you choose to share content through another app or service, that service's privacy practices apply.
Children
Meanderly is a general city-exploration experience and does not intentionally collect personal information from children.
Meanderly doesn't require accounts or personal profiles, so people can explore the service without providing their name, email address or other identifying information. The contact form is optional, and an email address is not required to send a message.
Access, correction and privacy questions
If you've sent us personal information through the contact form and want to ask what we hold, request a correction or ask us to delete it, use the Contact Meanderly form and choose Privacy question. Please include enough information for us to identify the relevant message.
Changes to Meanderly
Meanderly will evolve.
If we introduce features that change the way personal information is collected, stored or used — for example accounts, cloud-synchronised collections, social features or personalised services — we'll update this Privacy Policy to explain those changes.
Our basic approach will remain:
If we don't need your personal information, we don't collect it.
Changes to this policy
We may update this Privacy Policy as Meanderly changes or as our privacy obligations change.
The current version will always be published on Meanderly with the date it was last updated.
Contact
If you have a question about privacy or how Meanderly handles information, use the Contact Meanderly form and choose Privacy question.
