Visit Brisbane's Old Windmill

The Old Windmill on Wickham Terrace predates Brisbane as we know it. Built by convicts in 1828 to grind grain for the Moreton Bay penal settlement, the tower survived as the rough convict outpost around it grew into a city. Its story didn't end with flour: over the decades it became a signal station, an observation point and even played a part in some of Queensland's earliest experiments with radio and television. Nearly two centuries later, it remains an extraordinary physical link to the very beginnings of European Brisbane.
