Visit the Pitch Drop Experiment
St Lucia
Map →✧
Visit a science experiment that has been dripping since 1930 — extraordinarily slowly.
Inside the Parnell Building at the University of Queensland sits one of Brisbane's strangest claims to fame. In 1927, physics professor Thomas Parnell poured pitch into a glass funnel to demonstrate that something which looks and feels solid can actually flow.
The funnel was opened in 1930 and the pitch has been dripping ever since. Only nine drops have fallen, with years passing between them. Despite generations of students and researchers watching, nobody has witnessed a complete drop fall in person. It may be the closest Brisbane gets to turning waiting around into a scientific institution.

Good to know
You'll find the experiment in the foyer of UQ's Parnell Building, Building 7, opposite the Physics Museum.
