Brisbane’s great steel landmark has been spanning the river since 1940.
The Story Bridge has watched Brisbane grow up around it. When it opened in 1940, the city was smaller, quieter and still divided by a river that could make getting from one side to the other surprisingly difficult. Thousands of workers spent five years building the great steel cantilever; from Kangaroo Point and from Fortitude Valley until the two halves finally met above the river.
More than a million rivets hold it together, but its real place in Brisbane is less about engineering. For generations it has been part of the everyday backdrop to the city — crossed on the way to work, glimpsed from ferries, lit for celebrations and nights out at Howard Smith Wharves. Brisbane has changed enormously since 1940. Somehow, the Story Bridge has come to feel like it was always here.
